13/07/2010

A report on a review of the Corporate Health and Safety Performance Index (CHaSPI) undertaken for the Health and Safety Executive by Greenstreet Berman Ltd was published on 7th July 2010.

It aimed to provide information on the extent of CHaSPI's use, who is using it and how, as well as the ways in which it could be improved. This review was conducted in three phases during the period November 2008 - January 2009.

The key uses of CHaSPI identified were:

•·         To benchmark performance

•·         As an internal tool to identify strengths and weaknesses

•·         To report back on organisational health and safety performance

•·         As a selling point in bidding and tendering processes

•·         As a component of corporate responsibility with inclusion in public annual reports.

The report recommended in order to promote greater use, the following actions should be taken:

•·         Advantages: Take steps to increase awareness of CHaSPI and the functions it has to offer

•·         Sectors: Target those sectors (a) not well represented; (b) with the highest health and safety risks; (c) already demonstrating interest; and/or health and safety practitioners and directors/senior managers.
